“Rotto” - A Light Show

by Daniel on Oct.01, 2009, under Lighting Design

This short light show was created by me after meeting the creators of the song - Desert Child - on a South Australian tour a few weeks ago. They are a pair of sensational musicians and really gave me inspiration to create a light show to their song.

I am running a grandMA Fullsize with a MA NSP and MA onPC triggering an internal loop of SMPTE timecode. I have a small rig consiting of 4 x Mac 700 Profiles, 2  Mac 250 Entour and a pair of the new iLed Colour Banks.

I hope you enjoy this show, and if you would like to see some of your music or ideas translated into a light show or effects, please dont hesitate to contact me!

Cheers!

A Busy March Indeed!

by Daniel on Apr.01, 2009, under Lighting Design

Wow! GoslingProductions has been kept on their toes during the last several weeks, with a plethora of events, festivals and productions being run! It began with Soundwave 2009 at Bonython Park in Adelaide, where GoslingProductions was invited to be Lighting Designer for Stage 3. Using from FOH NSP 64’s, 8 x Mac 700 Profiles, 4 x Mac 700 Wash, 2 x Atomic 3K Strobes and a Hog 1000 for control, GoslingProductions successfully lit a variety of acts and bands on Stage 3 of Soundwave 2009.

Next, it was straight into WOMADelaide 2009 where GoslingProductions in association with Osmond Electronics Adelaide, were responsible for the lighting of all 7 WOMAD stages. Stage 1 had 8 x Mac 600, 4 x Mac 600 NT/E, 16 x Mac 700 Profile, 8 x Mac 700 Wash, & 8 x 4way Bars of 64 MFL’s. Stage 2 was rigged out with a selection of Mac 250 Wash fixtures, and 8 Mac 2K Performances aswell as Bars of 64 NSP’s. Stage 3 had Mac 250 Entours and some Mac 300 Washes, Stage 4 with Bars of NSP’s and 4 x Mac 500 Profiles. Stage 6 also had Mac 500 Profiles, with the other stages being rigged out with conventional fixtures. A MA Lighting GrandMA Fullsize was used to control Stage 1, with a Hog 1000 at the other stages, and conventional boards at those without moving fixtures.

Straight after WOMADeladie 2009 was a move into the Clipsal track. After only 4 days down time to clean, sort and repair any damaged fixtures, they were back on the truck and heading to the races. The Clipsal After Race Concerts were complete with 4 flying trusses, with circular trusses suspended beneath, with an array of ground lighting also. On the front truss were 8 x Mac 700 Wash, 6 x 2K Fresnel & 4 x 8way Molefay Blinders. On the next 4″ half circle were 4 x Mac 700 Profiles, and honeycomb LED fixtures. On the next truss were an array of NSP Bars, Mac 600 Wash’s, Atomic 3K Strobes and suspended under that were 3 half circles decked out with 16 x Mac 700 Profiles and more HoneyComb LED fixtures for audience wash.

Behind that was truss 3 with Mac 600 Washes and more NSP’s and behind that truss 4 with Mac 600 Wash’s, Atomic 3K Strobes and Mac 2K Performances. On the ground were a selection of Mac 600 NT/E’s as well as the remainder of the Mac 2K Performances. For side fill we had 4 x Mac 250 Wash’s and 2 Atomic 3K Strobes with scrollers. Flown under the back truss were four 2×4 meter low-res Pro Shop LED Video Wall, run off Arkaos. The whole rig was controlled by a GrandMA Fullsize with MA Light as backup, or a Hog iPC (whatever touring LD’s decided to use). 4 2.5KW Robert Juliat Followspots were positioned in the FOH Followspot Towers.

After a successful Clipsal 500, GoslingProductions was going out to the country for the Bundaleer Forest Music Weekend with the ASO. The main stage of Bundaleer had 4 x Mac 700 Profiles, 8 x Mac 250 Wash, and 2 x Robe DT 3000 Moving Projector Heads for Cyc imaging. This was accompanied by a range of 4-way NSP Bars, 2 & 1.5K Fresnels, 4way molefays with scrollers for houselight and honeycomb LED’s for the truss legs.

Stage 2 was a simple stage with 4 WFL bars, 4 x Mac 500 Profiles and some LED Strips to light up the roof of the hocker the stage was contained within. Both stages were run off a Hog 1000.

Images of the events will be up soon!

I hope you enjoyed my recap of the past month! Its been incredibly exciting and a wonderful few weeks, and I look forward to what’s next!

Cheers,

Daniel

Church of Singapore Christmas Bash

by Daniel on Dec.27, 2008, under Lighting Design

On Saturday 20th, GoslingProductions was called out to an emergency gig for the Church of Singapore and their ‘Christmas Bash’, as their LD fell sick and was unable to program the show. With a crowd of 1500 expected to be in attendence, GoslingProductions hurried down to the venue at Jurong East Sports Complex in Singapore to begin programming the show.

The rig consisted of 8 Robe 575 AT Spots, 4 XRS Wash’s, 2 Arcs for audience lighting, Blinders and an array of conventionals positioned at various points in the stadium. 6 of the Robe AT’s were positioned on 2m upright truss, with the remaining 2 on the stage floor. The 4 washes were placed between the drum kit rostra and the uprights on cases to provide some depth to the stage.

The Christmas Bash was a great success. Bands, a drama group and a guest pastor from the UK and was a great night out. The show had some preprogramming but was mainly busked off a GrandMA Ultralight.

Some pictures are posted below from the event.

Overall it was a privilege to be called up on to work on this event, and GoslingProductions looks forward to working with the Church of Singapore and MA again soon!

GoslingProductions & The GrandMA 2

by Daniel on Nov.26, 2008, under Integrated Solutions, Lighting Design

On the 23rd, 24th & 25th of November, GoslingProductions’ Lighting Designer was invited to take part in the 3 day MA training on the GrandMA 1 series consoles (for the first day and a half) and then on the GrandMA 2 for the third day. The training was held at the Grand Mecure Roxy Hotel in Singapore. It was indeed a privilege to work with some of the top lighting programmers and designers in the South East Asia region, and some of these names included Fares Aljunied, Wee Cheng Low, Javier Tan, Roy Choi and many more!

Not only this, but we were also privileged to be instructed by Ben Marquardt, a beta tester for the GrandMA 2 and met by MA’s Singapore Sales Director Jens Poehlker and MA Lighting International’s Managing Director, Michael Althaus. It was indeed a wonderul few days, not only to learn from some of the best, but to network and meet some of Singapore’s greatest.

I look forward to working more with MA and its already established designers and programmers in the near future.

I have put up some pictures of the training for you to have a look at.

Cheers!

Caught In A Spiders Web!

by Daniel on Aug.15, 2008, under General, Lighting Design

The 14th of August saw opening night of the Australian International School Singapore’s production of “Spider’s Web”. The Agatha Christie murder mystery, set in Copplestone Court Kent 1956, was a small but intricate set designed to mirror the interior of a drawing room in a posh Kent home. Lighting was intricate, with many practical components of the set having to come to life at the flick of a switch! Lighting Designer and Systems Engineer for the show, Daniel Gosling – a freelance designer and operator based in Singapore – chose a GrandMA Pico console with remote for the production. When asked about why the Pico, Daniel stated “..there was a lot of complex programming throughout the show with many individual dimmers needing to be accessed effortlessly and the ability to quickly and easily grab stage components through the GrandMA’s versatility and customizable touch screen was a godsend”.

The set’s intricacy also allowed Daniel to explore the use of complex shadow and so adapt his design to the ‘film noir’ concept, desired by director Cate Weston.

Although the overhead rig was simple, consisting of a mixture of Selecon Plano-Convex with 18°, 22° and 24° lens tubes, Selecon Fresnels and an array of mini-fresnels, many ‘behind the scenes extras’ allowed the MARemote on a PDA to become very useful during programming and technical rehearsals.

Spider’s Web - A classic murder mystery, only enhanced by the GrandMA Pico!

GoslingProductions meets PALME Asia 2008

by Daniel on Jul.12, 2008, under Integrated Solutions, Lighting Design

During this years PALME Asia 2008, held between the 8th - 10th of July, GoslingProductions privileged to be invited to work with MA Lighting at their J19 booth at the Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore.

It was a great opportunity for GoslingProductions to intermingle with some of the local MA users and meet many new faces, and rekindle some old networks and relationships.

It was also fantastic to meet Lighting Designer and MA Specialist, Paul Collison, and Addam Crawford as they visited after working on the Singapore National Day Parade, a venue very close to Suntec Convention Centre!

At the event, we had the Fullsize GrandMA Series 1 Console, A GrandMA Ultralight, the new Fullsize GrandMA Series 2 Console and accompanying MA2 3D, the brand new visualiser due to be released with the MA 2 consoles. It is a fantastic piece of software, with incredibly realistic shadows, beam effects and movement paths.

We also had a whole range of Schnik-Schnak LED screens (distributed exclusively through MA Lighting) run off a side network rack, fed through a media server and linked into the MA network. Also on the stands network was a range of NSP (Network Signal Processors), DimMA Racks, NPU’s, MA Media Servers, Replay Units and monitors for the media servers. Running off the second media server was a mixture of advertising material being sent to one 40″ LCD TV at the far side of the stand, with the other LCD displaying the pixel mapping being outputted through art-net to the LED Screens.

It was a great few days, and it was a true pleasure to work with MA Lighting’s MD’s Michael Althaus & Michael Adenau, MA Lighting’s Project Coordinator Oliver Ditter, and MA Singapore’s Sales Manager, Jens Poehlker.

GoslingProductions is now exclusively dealing with MA Consoles, as an operating, design and programming platform and strives to integrate video and lighting through their truly one of a kind, leading systems.

Below is a picture of the group of the MA Stand J19, the GrandMA 2 & the GrandMA Series 1 Fullsize Consoles.
